Self Portrait Art Sessions

Primary School, Brighton
March 2017

Patcham-1As well as facilitating Painting from the Heart workshops for adults I introduce a similar process to children in Primary Schools.

During these sessions with children aged 8 – 9 years, I asked them to think and feel about what their identity was in relation to their environment and activities they like to take part in, and then paint their self portrait freely and spontaneously from their “sensing self”.

Interestingly many of them wanted to plan their work beforehand, often using rulers, pencils and rubbers. I suggested painting immediately, without thinking about it. I encouraged experimentation by using the end of a paintbrush to carve into the paint, or mix colours to see what happened or use fingers to dab and dot.

I also encouraged them to continue creating layers of paint and change their images right to the end of the session.

The important aspect of these workshops was for children to fully enjoy and engage in the process of painting for the simple joy of painting in itself. The end result was not to be judged as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. I loved the energy in the room as children chatted and laughed as they painted – the end result is vibrant and alive!
